Being a student at UNIS
Svalbard is really the place to be an active student. If you have an idea, this is the easiest place on earth to get your message through. Longyearbyen is a rich community and it is possible to get money if you want to do something for the locals. And people will join in! We don't have any official student organization and there should never be one. Longyearbyen is a small community and we don't want to group together to isolate others. This means that all activities should incorporate the entire community. And after all there are quite a lot of activities. Be active.
We have a student democracy with a student council that represents us in the organisation of UNIS. The members are normally elected for one semester. The students also have quite a lot of outdoor equipment, two cabins and arrange all sorts of activities. That means that new people are needed both during the autumn and spring. They are supposed to meet quite often and discuss what is going on. The student council is led by the student leader. The all-meetings are for everyone and it is here that the most important decisions about economy and welfare are taken. All information regarding the student democracy is available on the computer network at W:\STUDENTDEMOKRATI. The students have received as much as 40.000 NOK as welfare money per semester the last years. ALL THE STUDENTS decide how this money should be spent. That is one of the reasons to come to the announced all-meetings. If you pop up here and speak out you will be able to exert your influence. And that is what you should do!
The students usually arrange a Norwegian course, which starts as early as possible in the semester. It will be announced. Join!
