It is difficult to get bored in Nybyen. There is always something going on. Nybyen is situated a little out of town. Students should try to join the rest of the community as much as possible. We are wanted. Listed below are some of the activities students like to join.
Cinema
Located in 'Huset'. Movies every Sunday at 20.00 and occasionally on other days. Varied programming ranging from Hollywood action to 'artsy' European movies. Price 60 NOK. Children's movies at 18:00 are less expensive and sometimes more amusing.
Choir
A coed choir for all citizens. They rehearse in the church (15) every Monday at 20:00. Once in a while they give small concerts or go on trips.
Red Cross Auxiliary Corps: Open for everybody. Meetings every Monday at 19.00 in their building on the road to the airport, just after the power station. They arrange courses and have drills for rescue operations. Every semester there is a famous helicopter trip for active members.
Music Band
Practices once a week.
Leikaring
Traditional country dance club. This is Norwegian culture at its most ex-treme.
Barbecue-party on the tundra
This is possible all year-round (as long as we get enough coal- and coal is very cheap in Longyearbyen).
Main dinner in the kitchen
This is the less ambitious concept. We share kitchen - why eat alone?
Museums and exhibitions
As a new student on Svalbard you should visit the museum (14). It is very interesting and gives you a short background for understanding the com-munity. There is also a gallery with various exhibitions in Nybyen (20).
Festivals
There are several festivals and community parties during the year. In January there is a one-weekend jazz festival. When the Sun returns in the beginning of March, there is a one-week sun festival ("solfesten") with a lot of activities. One of these is a sledge tournament, "Ta Sjansen," with fun sledges and costumes, which traditionally has been arranged by students, and has become one of the favorite events. In autumn there is also a party called høstfesten.
Other activities
In the autumn there is a charity event called 'TV-aksjonen'. Whole of Norway competes in collecting money for a charity organization. There are a lot of activities going on in connection with this, also on Svalbard, and you're welcome to help. The last years Svalbard has allways been No. 1 of the whole country, collecting as much as 250,- NOK and more per citizen.
