Bicycle
There are 3 kilometers from Nybyen to UNIS, so many of us prefer to use a bike. Sometimes it may be a little cold and you may find yourself blowing off the road. It's a good idea for winter to buy a face mask and some goggles. Be careful at the turn at Svalbardhallen, the road is often slippery. Watch out for reindeer and birds, since they have no fear. Watch out for cars. They show no fear either. It is quite cheap or free to bring a bicycle by plane. It is a good idea to wrap some carton around it as it may get some rough handling on the plane. It is also possible to buy a second-hand or even a new bicycle in Longyearbyen. Check the board at the reception at UNIS, the post office, or Svalbardbutikken. A useful second-hand bicycle will cost you a few hundred NOK. You need reflectors, and according to law and safety you should use lights when it gets dark. Buy some blinking diodes.
Foot
If you want more fresh air join the walking students. It takes about half an hour to get to UNIS, and as an extra plus you may wake up in the morning even in the dark period. In winter, always remember to wear a reflector. There have been nasty accidents and a lot of near accidents. So just get one of those free reflectors at Sysselmannen or in the UNIS reception. Red blinking diode-lights are highly visible even in windy weather.

There are 2 taxi companies in town. They both use mini-busses, which means that there is a lot of space. The price for a ride Nybyen-UNIS is approximately 60 NOK during daytime, and a little more in the evening and weekends. Maxi-Taxi (Tel. 79021305). Ask for the biggest mini-bus in town with space for 5 bicycles (that might be the maximum.) Longyearbyen Buss & Taxi (Tel. 79021375.) 2 VW Caravelle's don't take any bicycles at all...
Car
Sometimes students get their hands on a car. In Longyearbyen there are several cars in really bad condition, watch out. There are some mini-busses at UNIS. They are not for us to use, but if you need it for some special occasion, contact the student administration. At Sysselmannen's office you can get a mini-bus driving permission for free (if you have a regular driving license).

If you are walking and the lesson starts in 5 minutes try to hitch-hike. People are friendly and will pick you up. Really, that works!
Scooter
Some students drive scooter to school. Compared to a bike, you will not save much time, since it takes some minutes to get the scooter going. Driving is more comfortable than biking. There is a lot of pollution in Longyeardalen because of scooter driving. If you turn this into a custom you will increase this.
