On "Haugen" where the road suddenly turns, there is a really good sports hall, Svalbardhallen (17). It also houses a swimming pool and a workout room. It is run by Longyearbyen Lokalstyre and it is mostly the school (close to it, with an indoor passageway) and "Svalbard Turn"(Svalbard athletics) who operate in the hall. It costs 500 NOK per year (300NOK for half a year) to be a member of Svalbard Turn, and that gives you the possibility to join the different subgroups and train whenever you like. The different subgroups arrange small tournaments, and in spring and autumn there is a championship between Longyearbyen and Barentsburg in several sports. There is also a squash hall, and it costs 60 NOK for one hour and 20 NOK for renting a racket. Good thing to bring if you plan playing regularly.
Svalbard Turn training hours in Svalbardhallen, prices and more exact time-tables can be found in the ticket booth in the hall and for people having a little knowledge of norwegian, on the site of www.svalbardturn.no . You can buy semester and year cards which can save you some money. There are usually a lot of students participating in the sports activities.
the gym and swimming pool is run by svalbardhallen. you can buy 6 and 12 month entry cards to both or simply pay each time you want to swim/train. the gym is open 8am-9/10pm on weeknights, 1300-1700 on saturdays and 1400-1700 on sundays. the pool is open in the evenings and on the weekends.
On the "Huset" side of the valley there is a cross-country skiing track (in the winter and spring). The track is quite boring, but good fore practice and it is prepared twice a week . In late April there is a ski marathon in Longyearbyen, and in the beginning of May there is one in Barentsburg.
In the summer there is also a running marathon along the town roads and a Quatralon early in the autumn term. If you're lucky you arrive before and can participate, it's a lot of fun. You can start teams also. It's some km running, kayaking, biking, shooting, biking (in this order).
Usually some students arranged ice swimming once each month.
This it the in-town sports, then there of cores is skiing and hiking on the glaciers. And in the summertime sailing and diving in the fjord is also a possibility.
