Eating and drinking out is very expensive. This is partly because the salaries of the people working there are reasonably high, and if you are nice to the regular customers (and the other visitors) you might survive on your tips. It is therefore a good idea to work there yourself. We only pay 16.8 % income tax on Svalbard and don't need any working permission because the Svalbard treaty, stating that all signing countries have equal right to commercial activities on Svalbard. If you are from another country, nobody cares...

The most popular place where many students work part time is Huset, and UNIS itself. Check your UNIS mail regularly, and be fast in answering job offers. The majority of the jobs is about helping ISS catering some event, or working as a field work assistant.

It is also popular to work as a guide during tourist seasons. Spitsbergen Travel and SWS are the largest tourist operators, smaller companies are Nox Polaris, Poli Arctici and Basecamp. If you have some experience from any kind of outdoor activities, this may be an interesting way of in-come.

In addition, there are some students working for Lokalstyre in the swimming pool (as lifeguards), the youth club and in several of the stores in the city. There are reasonable employment opportunities in Longyearbyen at the moment. It may be necessary to have income to pay for a scooter, but otherwise don't work too much.
